Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. Prov. 18:21
It was a scary day when I realized this verse was literally true. I had lived in constant verbal abuse for nearly 20 years. For most of that time I had been hypervigilant to protect my children from physical abuse by their father, thinking physical abuse was the greatest danger in our home. Little did I know the verbal abuse was slowly killing me.
In school a few years later we studied the scientifically-verified physical affects of extreme stress. Science has proven that constantly triggering the fight-or-flight mechanism can produce chronic and life-threatening illnesses because it wears down, and eventually compromises, the immune system. This was what happened to me and I ended up with cancer.
When the Word says death and life are in the power of the tongue, it is not speaking metaphorically! The power of “death” spoken over us, or even spoken to ourselves by us either vocally or mentally, is dynamic. Those “mental tapes” can be just as destructive as having someone standing over us and literally cursing us.
However, this verse has an equally powerful opposite effect available. Life is in the power of the tongue as well.
There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health. Prov. 12:18
We can choose life. We can choose to remove ourselves from those who speak death in our lives. We can choose to reprogram our own mental “death” tapes by renewing our minds in Christ. And we can choose to speak the life of truth in our own lives – with the fruit of literal life available as a result. This is what the Word says! …the tongue of the wise is health!
We can attempt to do this by speaking affirmations to ourselves. This is a technique advocated my many natural health practitioners, success gurus, and various religions. However, as believers we have a far more powerful tool available.
The Word says Jesus is life. The Bible also says Jesus is the Word. What better way to speak life into our existence than by discovering and speaking the truth of the Word as it relates to our lives?
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The same was in the beginning with God.
All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
In him was life; and the life was the light of men. Jn 1:1-4
The words of the Word have the power to bring and sustain life. We can choose what words we will entertain in our minds and hearts as the truth about us. Will it be the words spoken by abusers or by our own minds based on past hurts? Or will it be the words of the Word, that have the power to bring life?
